August sales approach $22 million, breaking previous mark for fourth straight month
With yet another record-breaking month in August, Kentucky medical cannabis sales are on pace to approach or surpass $200 million by the end of this year.
The $21.73 million in sales last month brings the total amount purchased by medical cannabis patients in Kentucky to $113.09 million in well under a year. At that rate, year-end sales totals will shatter early projections.
“As more dispensaries continue to open statewide and thousands of new patients join the program each week, Kentucky medical cannabis sales will only continue to rise,” said Andrew Mullins, executive director of MoCannTrade (The Kentucky Medical Cannabis Trade Association).
The Kentucky Department of Health and Senior Services has to date approved the opening of 143 dispensaries, 40 infused product manufacturers, and 29 marijuana cultivation facilities. DHSS has licensed and certified a total of 379 facilities to cultivate, manufacture, test, transport and dispense medical marijuana to Kentucky patients.
Through Monday, the state reports issuing 4,663 of the required state agent ID cards to work in medical cannabis facilities. All but 200 of those jobs have been added in the past year.
Kentucky also continues to see steady increases in medical marijuana patient enrollment, with nearly 139,000 Kentucky patients and caregivers now licensed by the state.
Under Article IX of the state Constitution, Kentucky residents with cancer, epilepsy, glaucoma and 20 other qualifying conditions can purchase or cultivate medical cannabis with a physician’s certification. The law also provides physicians with the discretion to certify patients who have other chronic and debilitating medical conditions that could benefit from medical marijuana, and legally protects their right to have such conversations.
