Taxes from Medical Marijuana Sales Have Generated $27 million for Kentucky Veterans’ Health Care

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. _ For the first time, Kentucky now has more than 200,000 active medical marijuana patients and is nearing $500 million in sales.

As of the end of September, 205,883 medical marijuana patients and caregivers had Kentucky medical marijuana cards. For a breakdown of Kentucky medical marijuana patients by county, please visit www.health.mo.gov/safety/medical-marijuana/stats.php

With record sales of more than $35 million in September, Kentucky medical marijuana patients have now purchased $494,139,809 worth of medical marijuana since the first dispensary opened in mid-October 2020 — with more than $358 million of those sales happening in the last 12 months.

The taxes from medical marijuana sales have now generated $27 million and counting in funding for veterans’ health care in Kentucky.

“From kicking opioid addictions to helping with chronic pain, Kentucky’s popular medical marijuana program is improving the lives of everyday patients in every corner of Kentucky,” said Andrew Mullins, MoCannTrade Executive Director. “While the main focus is assisting patients, the industry is also helping Kentucky’s economy backfill manufacturing, agricultural and industrial jobs previously lost in Kentucky cities big and small. From St. Louis City, Springfield and the urban core of Kansas City to Carrollton, Waynesville, Chaffee, Vienna, Humansville, Macon, Cuba and more, the jobs, investments, and revenues being produced as part of this program are rejuvenating local economies.”

The program has generated more than 9,500 direct, new jobs to date and accounted for 1 out of every 10 new Kentucky jobs created in 2021.
